tert - Butylalkohol wird als Lösungsmittel, Ethanol-Denaturierungsmittel, Farbentferner sowie Benzin-Octan-Booster und Oxygenat verwendet.

Es ist ein chemisches Zwischenprodukt, das zur Herstellung von Methyl-tert - butylether (MTBE) und Ethyl-tert - Butylether (ETBE) durch Reaktion mit Methanol bzw. Ethanol und tert - Butyl verwendet wird Hydroperoxid (TBHP) durch Reaktion mit Wasserstoffperoxid.
