POM (Polyoxymethylene), also known as Acetal, is a high-performance thermoplastic polymer with the chemical formula (C3H6O)n and CAS number 9002-81-7. It has excellent mechanical properties such as high stiffness, low friction coefficient, good chemical and creep resistance, and superior dimensional stability. POM is widely used in various engineering applications such as gears, bearings, valves, and pump components due to its durability and high strength-to-weight ratio.

In recent years, the demand for POM has been increasing due to the growing automotive and consumer electronics industries. POM's mechanical properties make it suitable for automotive parts such as fuel systems, interior trims, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) components. It is also commonly used in electronic devices such as camera parts, printers, and computer peripherals. The global POM market size is expected to reach USD 4.5 billion by 2025, with Asia Pacific region being the largest consumer of POM.

However, POM has some disadvantages such as low resistance to UV light and environmental stress cracking, which limited its usage in applications that require outdoor exposure. To overcome these limitations, manufacturers are developing modified and reinforced POM materials with improved properties. In addition, there is a growing interest in bio-based and recycled POM to reduce the environmental impact of POM production and disposal.
